The Most Important Shot
At your next clinic ask your students what they believe is the most important shot in tennis and why. After listening to a few responses and justifications tell them they are all wrong and that the most important shot in tennis is the “next one”. Even though that response may seem trite it is true because it is the only shot you can do anything about. You can use this as a good “lead in” to any lesson on footwork, racket preparation or anything that prepares you for the next shot.

The Dance of Two Wolves
One evening, while sitting by their camp fire, a wise old Tennis Indian Chief told his grandson about a great battle that was going on inside himself, and also, inside his little grandson when he plays tennis. He said, "My grandson, a battle rages within each of us playing tennis or any sport; it is between two wolves. One is evil; negative thinking, envy, self-pity, inferiority, lies to one's self of one's own ability, superiority, and ego. The other is good; joy of the game your playing, inner peace of one's ability that day, love of the game, camaraderie, hope, patience, humility, and basic faith to persevere with gratitude for having a noble opponent to compete with in the first place."
"Which wolf wins?" asked the grandson.
The old Indian Chief simply replied, " The one I feed Grandson, the one I feed."
"Feed the good wolf my grandson. For if you do, you will win all your games you play in life, win or lose!"
